Southern California Peoples Justice Conference 05/2011 Los Angeles
A planning committee has begun efforts on a Southern California Peoples Justice Conference, to be held the weekend of May 13-15, connecting people facing oppression within the so-called criminal justice system and grassroots activists dealing with various aspects of that system.
Bringing together initiatives begun by the Jericho Amnesty Movement Los Angeles chapter, the Los Angeles Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant, GrassrootsKPFK and the Justice Working Group of the Martin Luther King Coalition for Jobs, Justice and Peace, the conference is aimed at uniting people dealing with police terror, political repression, prosecutorial misconduct, and the prison-industrial complex.
Issues that will be addressed include racial profiling, community control of the police, cop-watching, prison abolition, ending the death penalty, amnesty and/or clemency for political prisoners, shutting supermax and isolation units, opposing ICE raids and detentions, and reintegration of formerly incarcerated people into socially useful and gainful work.
Other groups involved include Anti-Racist Action L.A., the Black Riders and Brown Riders Liberation Party, the Workers Solidarity Alliance
Planning meetings are being held every other Saturday at noon at the Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research, 6120 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles (between Slauson and Gage).
